Land Sale
The sale of mineral rights for specified parcels of land by government auction.

Laytime
The amont of time allotted to a tanker at berth to complete either loading or discharge of cargo, usually expressed in running hours. Laytime (or layhours) is fixed by prior agreement between the vessel owner and the company chartering the vessel.

Leachate
A solution or product obtained by percolating liquie (such as water) in order to separate soluble components of a mixture or ore.

Time needed to plan and construct a facility, including the time required to obtain government approval, carry ou environmental assessment, etc.

Light Crude Oil
A term applied to crude oil with low density, and therefore a high proportion of light petroleum fractions. Generally, the light crude oil category includes all crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons with API gravity higher than approximately 30 degrees Celcius.

Light Water Reactor (LWR)

A nuclear reactor which uses light (or ordinary) water as a moderator and coolant and enriched uranium as a fuel.

Lignite
A solid fuel of quality higher than peat but lower than bituminous coal. Lignite, sometimes called "brown coal," has a high content of moisture and volatile gases; thus, it is soft and has a relatively low heat content, at most 19 GJ/tonne.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
| Natural gas which is cooled and maintained as a liquid at -160o Celcius, reduced in volume nearly 600-fold. When shipped by tanker, it is typically vapourized at the receiving terminal for pipeline transport.
|

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Hydrocarbons which are gaseous under normal temperatures. LPGs are derived from natural gas and from various refinery off-gases resulting from such processes as crude distillation and cracking. Propane, butanes, propane/butane mixes, propylene and propane/propylene mixes are all referred to as LPGs.

Load
The amount of electric power delivered or required at any specified point or points on a system. Load originates at the power-consuming equipment of the customer.

Load Factor
The ratio of the average load during a designated period to the peak or maximum load in that same period. Usually expressed as a percentage.

Load Management
A method of controlling electrical demand by switching off equipment, or moving demand from one time period to another.

Location
Point at which a well is to be drilled. Commonly termed wellsite.

Logging
A form of testing which utilizes special instruments that record the formation type, depth thickness, porosity, and fluid content of the formation.

Low-Grade Heat
Heat (usually in the form of steam) which does not exceed 100o Celcius (212o fahrenheit). Also called low temperature heat.
